What it is

Ingo Giezendanner, who works as GRRRR, has been drawing the cities he lives in and travels through since 1998, with pen on paper, on location. Zurich is home; the drawings also come from New York, New Orleans, Cairo, Nairobi, Karachi and Colombo. They have appeared in magazines, books and animated films, and as installations and wall paintings.

Mille Feuilles

The cover of Mille Feuilles: a black and white pen drawing of dense, overlapping leaves of many kinds, filling the whole surface

Mille Feuilles (Nieves, 2024) is a thick softcover of 1,000 pages, 13.2 × 18 cm and 5.5 cm thick, printed black and white in offset (ISBN 978-3-907179-77-2). The title is French for "a thousand leaves." The whole book is given to wild, rampant greenery, drawn mostly in black and white, with patterns and faces showing up in the foliage. Nieves calls it overwhelming on purpose, a reference book for plants that grow out of control. On his own site it is GRR102 in his numbered series.

A page from Mille Feuilles: a tall tree's bare, branching limbs and clumps of leaves against a pale sky, with a low skyline at the bottom
A page from Mille Feuilles: pale roots trailing down through dark soil packed with small pebbles
